Distinguish between primary and secondary packaging

Primary packaging is in direct contact with the food and provides the product-specific barrier. For food, HvC manufactures secondary packaging only: it groups, protects, informs and presents the product already enclosed in its primary packaging.

Primary packaging for direct food contact is not part of HvC’s service. Our carton packaging is designed around the existing primary packaging and the conditions during transport and storage.

Consider climate and process

Board absorbs or releases moisture depending on its environment and the duration of exposure. This can change stiffness, flatness and folding behaviour. Cold products can also cause condensation when moved into warmer areas.

• Record temperature and humidity conditions along the cold chain
• Match material and adhesive to the conditions
• Include stresses from stacking and transport
• Test erection and closing behaviour on the customer's equipment
• Define storage and acclimatisation of the flat blanks

No universal cooling solution

A solid-board folding carton is generally not a stand-alone thermally insulating package. Its role and performance limits must be considered within the overall system of primary packaging, transport packaging and the cooling concept.

HvC develops and produces custom secondary packaging from solid board. Approval is based on the specific product specification and the conditions at the customer's premises.
