What distinguishes relief varnish

Relief varnish is applied selectively to create a perceptibly raised layer. Depending on the process, design, substrate and varnish, it produces a glossy, matt or textured surface. This allows logos, lettering and graphic details to be highlighted selectively.

The achievable height and edge definition are not fixed standard values. They are determined for the specific material and chosen production process and should be assessed using a sample.

Coordinate structural design and print data

Relief varnish affects more than appearance. It can also influence folding, stacking and machine compatibility. Its position must therefore be checked against the cutting outline and carton structure before production.

• Keep gluing, creasing and cutting areas clear
• Check the feasibility of fine lines and small lettering
• Define overlaps with printing inks and other effects
• Consider friction and stacking behaviour for machine-processed cartons
• Sample the effect on the intended board

Production with specialist partners

HvC does not apply relief varnish at its own factory. We coordinate the technical aspects of finishing with structural design, offset printing and converting, and arrange its application through qualified partners where required.

For sensitive applications, the materials used and necessary documentation are assessed for the specific project. For food, HvC manufactures secondary packaging without direct food contact only; finishing is coordinated with its structure and conditions of use.
