How to store folding cartons correctly

Dry, protected and as consistent as possible

Folding cartons should be stored in enclosed, dry rooms and protected from direct sunlight. Significant climatic changes can cause board to absorb or release moisture. This can affect dimensions, flatness and folding behaviour.

Rigid, general temperature and humidity values are of little use without knowing the material, packaging and process. The agreed specification, recommendations for the specific board and conditions that are as consistent as possible are what matter.

Protect pallets and blanks

The original packaging should remain closed until the cartons are needed wherever possible. Pallets must stand level and be protected against impacts, shifting, dust and moisture. Concentrated loads, damaged edges or unsuitable stacking can disrupt subsequent automatic processing.

• Do not store pallets immediately beside damp walls or doors
• Define permissible stacking heights and loads for each project
• Use older stock first in accordance with the agreed principle
• Keep batches and items clearly identified
• Protect opened remaining quantities against climatic influences and dust again

Allow acclimatisation before processing

Following delivery in cold or warm conditions, the packaging material should be given enough time to adapt to the production environment. The time required depends on the temperature difference, pallet size, packaging and material.

Coordinated batch sizes and delivery planning can reduce storage time and space requirements. HvC therefore considers palletisation and logistics requirements during project planning.

Match stock levels and delivery batches to consumption

Cost-effective packaging logistics consider annual demand, call-off quantities, variants, storage capacity and the risk of changes together. Very large batches can reduce the unit price while tying up space and capital. Very small batches can result in more frequent setup and transport operations.

A robust solution is based on actual consumption and process data. Blanket statements about optimum batch sizes or savings are not meaningful without this basis.
