The role of secondary packaging

Primary packaging directly encloses the product. Board secondary packaging holds the primary pack and, where applicable, instructions for use or other components. It provides space for legally required and product-specific information and protects the contents during handling and transport.

The pharmaceutical customer determines which protection and labelling functions are necessary within the scope of its product and authorisation requirements.

Structural design for reliable processes

Dimensions, tolerances, board grade, creasing and gluing must suit both the contents and the packaging equipment. Print design and technical elements are coordinated with the cutting outline and converting.

• Adequate product protection and a defined fit for the components

• Legible labelling and suitable areas for codes
• Project-specific first-opening features where required
• Clear approvals and controlled revision statuses

Requirements are implemented for each project

Terms such as GMP, serialisation or tamper protection do not constitute a blanket performance promise for an individual folding carton. The specific implementation and evidence must be coordinated with the responsible customer and the applicable requirements.

HvC develops and produces secondary packaging from solid board and board solutions for pharmaceutical and technical applications. Primary packaging, filling and packing the end product are not part of our services.

Data, labelling and tamper protection

Depending on the product and target market, serialisation, codes, Braille or features that show whether a pack has been opened for the first time may be required. The responsible customer specifies which elements are necessary and how they are validated.

To ensure that structural design and print design work together, reserved areas, legibility, contrast, tolerances and the position of technical features must be defined early. Changes are introduced into the production process using clearly identified data revisions and approvals.
